EdgeX Foundry is an open source IoT edge platform hosted by the Linux Foundation. Within a year of its existence, EdgeX was able to reduce its memory footprint, CPU utilization, startup bootstrap time, and file size requirements by a factor of 10x or more. Additionally, EdgeX is a distributable solution where microservices can run across a continuum of compute resource from the edge to the cloud. The new size and distributed architecture of EdgeX allow portions to squeeze as close to the device/sensor edge as possible. This allows intelligence to work its way farther “south” in the IoT landscape in order to reduce or remove latency concerns, lower transportation and storage costs, and allow for even more disconnected operation. In this session, pick up lessons learned from an open source community that is trying to keep things lean and mean while also flexible and interoperable at the edge.
